21 Sci-Fi Movies to See in 2016

21 Sci-Fi Movies to see in 2016 ~ Jessica E. Subject, Author of Sci-Fi Romance

Every year, and sometimes twice a year, I make a list of all the sci-fi movies I’m looking forward to seeing in the coming year. I don’t usually include titles that don’t yet have a release date, so last year, I did a second post with titles that released later in the year. You can find them here: post one | post two

Of those I wanted to watch in 2015, I saw four at the theatre, and three others on DVD or Netflix. Most I enjoyed. Some, I didn’t. My favorites were The Martian, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Jurassic World, Home, Jupiter Ascending, and Avengers: Age of Ultron. There are many others I had on my list that I still need to see.

With this year’s list, I had 29 movies originally. But, five did not have a set release date. And I took out a couple others to make it 21.

Here they are, with trailers for some of them….

1. 400 Days – releases January 15, 2016

2. The 5th Wave – January 22, 2016

3. Synchronicity – January 22, 2016

4. Terminus – January 22, 2016

5. Lazer Team – January 27, 2016

6. Deadpool – February 12, 2012

7. Allegiant: The Divergent Series – March 18, 2016

8. Midnight Special – March 18, 2016

9. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice – March 25, 2016

10. Ratchet and Clank – April 29, 2016

11. Captain America: Civil War – May 6, 2016

12. X-Men: Apocalypse – May 27, 2016

13. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows – June 3, 2016

14. Independence Day: Resurgence – June 24, 2016

15. Ghostbusters – July 15, 2016

16. Star Trek Beyond – July 22, 2016

  1. I love this post. You always make me aware of upcoming movies I hadn’t heard of. I want to see the new Star Trek movie, Rogue One, Ghostbusters, and the Independence Day remake. Oh, and Allegiant, of course. I’m dying to see how they handle the end.

    1. Yes! I wonder if they will stay true to the book. I wonder the same thing about Mockingjay, as I haven’t seen part two yet. Though, I was much more satisfied with the ending of the Divergent series than The Hunger Game series.

    1. Those are must watches for me, too. But, in franchises like these, I always wonder if they’ll be as good as the previous. Sometimes they’re better. Other times, not so much.

  2. So much funness! I’m really eager to see Rogue One (Star Wars universe) and what they can do with a spin-off story line. 400 Days looks really intriguing, as does The Space Between Us, though the plot summaries on this one seem to be at odds. (I think the “raised on Mars and returns to Earth” plot summary has a lot more potential than the Merman one.)

Terminus and Passengers both look like they could be intriguing, but I’ll need to know before I decide to shell out for theater tickets or wait for pay per view.

And Ghostbusters, Star Trek, Divergent/Allegiant and Independence Day are back too! Looks like I might be spending some time in the theaters this year.

    1. Overall, I think it’s a great year for sci-fi in film. Maybe it will be as well for sci-fi in print. 🙂 Seems to me this is the biggest collection of sci-fi movies I’ve seen since I started doing this. And there are some that looked intriguing that I didn’t include. I’m very excited! 🙂

  3. Great list here! I’m especially looking forward to the next Star Trek and Independence Day Installments. Oh, and Deadpool. I think Deadpool is going to be hilarious.
