Food in Stories

I recently read a post by a fellow Decadent author about whether or not to have characters eating in a story. It can be very tricky, and authors need to be sure characters are not talking with their mouths full. It can also be a lot of fun, and very sexy!

The second story in The Underground series, Never Gonna Desert You has two moments that I recall where characters are eating. While it is mostly replicated food, there is the odd moment where characters are able to find something fresh. Here’s one of those moments from the story…

Reaching into her bag, she pulled out a container, her present to Melina. “Happy anniversary.”

Her girlfriend accepted the gift with a look of caution. “Thank you. What is it?”

“Open it.” Brook nodded, anxiously awaiting her reaction.

Melina pulled the lid from the container and gasped. “Strawberries?” She sniffed the bowl. “They have a smell. They’re not replicated. Where did you find them?”

“I grew them for you.”

“You did?” Melina’s eyes glazed over.

She nodded. She would do anything for Melina. “Yes. I remember you telling me how you wanted to taste them, see if I….” Her cheeks flushed. If I taste the same.

Melina’s expression changed. She grinned, eyes sparkling. “Well, let’s find out.” She removed a strawberry from the container and placed the ripe fruit between her full lips.

God, she wanted to kiss her. Brook groaned, suddenly envious of the berry. “How is it?”

Melina stared at her while taking a bite. She slurped in a piece, red juice running down her chin. “Mmm, better than I ever imagined.”

Then Melina leaned forward. Her moist lips met the sensitive skin of Brook’s neck, sending liquid heat rushing through her veins. Brook’s pussy throbbed. If they’d been in her apartment, Brook would have Melina naked already.

Melina pulled away, running her finger down between Brook’s breasts. “But I’d rather taste you any day.”

Brook’s head spun. Electric tension left her synapses firing. “Maybe we have time to—”

“One hour until curfew,” the mechanical voice belted out, chilling her desire.

While The Underground series is available as individual stories, it is also available as a digital box set and a print anthology.

RAIN, Taryn Kincaid's dystopian retelling of Sleeping Beauty #BeyondFairytales

A Beyond Fairytales story

by Taryn Kincaid

Sleeping Beauty in a post-apocalyptic land…

In a world gone mad, where little remains but a vast wasteland of sand, the leader of a troop of roving warriors welcomes a brave young woman into his midst.

Much as he burns for her, Major Clay Worthington swears to keep his distance from the mysterious woman, so sensitive even the stinging rain can wound her.

Rosina Brierly is besotted with the formidable soldier and will gladly trade her life for one torrid night of blissful passion in his arms.

But when sleep overcomes them, will true love prevail?

Does the major ever feel lust? Does he covet a woman’s touch? He never gave any sign he did. Too aloof and austere, too remote from the simple emotions of mere mortal men.

He shook her again. “Wake up, princess. The rain will come soon.”

The men looked forward to the rain. They hated the relentless sun blasting down upon them, as if they thought it would incinerate what was left of the earth beneath their boots, baking the soft sand into badlands as hard as concrete. They’d strip off their T-shirts and boots, their combat fatigues, and sometimes even their camouflage boxer shorts, and dance and play, naked or nearly so, in the slanting gray soup, laughing, tossing round balls or throwing saucer-shaped plastic discs to each other.

For her, the showers had the opposite effect. The stinging rain sliced into her sensitive skin like acid, raising blisters and sores, sometimes bloodying her.

She did not know why the major called her princess. Perhaps he didn’t know either. Whatever royalty once walked the earth had long gone, fled underground or died in battle or simply disappeared. The war engulfed every human on the planet, every inch of land, and had waged so long she doubted anyone remembered anymore. Well, maybe Nicodemus. At least he sometimes hinted he did in the stories he told. And she had seen him whisper into the major’s ear, unknown things that made the major pale beneath his weathered tan.

Major Worthington did not treat her like a princess, though, except when she slumbered, when he knelt before her in her fantasy world, his head bowed, his fist over his heart, laying his sword at her feet and claiming the role of knight. Her hero. Her champion. When she awoke, he remained one of the elite warrior breed roaming the planet, bristling with weapons like the soldiers he led. He treated her as the translator she was to him, sometimes barking orders to her as if she were one of his men, only occasionally seeking her counsel.

She came fully awake as he jerked her up from the ground and yanked her toward him. The glare of the setting sun broadsided her, hurting her eyes. Why was he so insistent about the impending rain? No clouds yet darkened the sky, although the hour sped toward evening dusk now. But no hint of shadow yet blotted the horizon.

“I can smell it,” he muttered.

The Star Princess, a tale of lust, duty, and mistaken identity on another planet, by Jessica E. Subject

For those readers who already know me, you know it’s a HUGE surprise if there isn’t at least one alien in my stories. I’ve done it, but not very often. So, when I asked for a fairy tale to twist, I knew I would make it an alien romance. And lucky for me, The Star Money, which my Beyond Fairytales story is based on, was not long. It’s the story of an orphan girl who is willing to give the last of her belongings to those who have even less than her. And when she believes she has nothing left, she finds gold falling from the sky and never has to worry about not having enough of anything again.

Pretty simple, but with the second first draft, the hard part was fitting an alien and the romance into the story. There’s no way I could write an erotic romance about a young girl. So, I had to make the main character older. She’s 21, and about to meet her betrothed from Earth. But nothing goes as she’d imagined….

If you’ve never read sci-fi romance before, take a chance and read THE STAR PRINCESS. It’s available in the RED BOOK OF GROWN-UP FAIRYTALES for only 99¢. Plus, it’s also an audio book narrated by Jon Filipko.

I hope you are enjoying the posts from the authors behind the Beyond Fairytales series. Tomorrow, please look for a post from Louisa Bacio. And don’t forget to subscribe to the Decadent Publishing Newsletter (I’m the editor) to stay up-to-date on new Beyond Fairytales stories and other new releases. You can also subscribe to my newsletter for more sexy aliens and other sci-fi and paranormal creatures. (There may be a bit of contemporary in there, too.)

“What the hell are they doing?” he whispers, and I shake my head. Because I don’t know. I’ve spent years in the East, fighting the war, and years in the Wide Open, moving until I found Haven 8.

I have spent my life watching and killing the infects. I know their speed and rage and hunger. The screams they make and the blessed fucking silence when my sword severs their spinal column and kills the virus that reanimates them.

I watched the world end, had a fucking front row seat to the decision to drop a dirty bomb on Atlanta, the tipping point in the war against the dead.

I know zombies. It’s why Omar wanted me to lead the vanguard.

But I’ve never seen this shit, and I whisper the words through numb lips: “Fall back. We’ve gotta fall back.”

“The army is already moving,” Fisher says. I ignore him, looking at the rest of the unit. They’re my people. Not my second—he’s Omar’s. But the others are mine, and I won’t watch them be slaughtered for the fucking agenda of a madman.

“Fall back and radio this shit in,” I snap. “Now.”
