#WeWriWa: Colin’s turn to call home in ALWAYS HER WINGMAN #scifi #romance #scifirom

Welcome to another Weekend Writing Warriors post!

Thank you to everyone who commented last week! Here is another (unedited) snippet from ALWAYS HER WINGMAN, the first book in the series MARS SQUADRON 17.

Set-up: Last weekend Hannah lashed out at Colin because of the devastating news she’d received. Now, it’s Colin’s turn to call home. (I’ve cut some lines and edited to make it fit.)

His mother’s cheery face materialized on-screen, her cheeks a little more full than the last time he’d seen her, but otherwise appearing the same. “It’s so good to see you again. How are you doing? Did you get the care packages I sent?”

He shook his head, unable to deny the smile tugging at his lips. “Hi, Mom, it’s good to see you, too, and no, I didn’t. Unfortunately, they don’t consider your care packages necessary for the mission or the colony.”

“Well, where are they? I sent one for every birthday and Christmas that you were away.”

Yeah, nothing had changed.

Staff Sergeant Hannah Coriveau dedicated the last five years to the Space Military Command. Heading back to Earth, she’s ready to begin civilian life and reunite with her parents and the boyfriend she left behind. The person she’ll miss most is Garish—her wingman, best friend, and the one who made her regret not being single.

Senior Airman Colin Garish wants his squadron leader. Bad. After spending so much time by her side—both in the Martian skies and on the red planet—being her friend isn’t enough. When Hannah learns of her boyfriend’s infidelity, Colin is there to comfort her.

Before Colin has the chance to confess his feelings, Hannah receives worse news from home. Her father is dying. Seeing her devastation, Colin remains the friend she desperately needs. But in her grief, she pushes him away. Will Hannah let him back in her life when they land on Earth? Or will Colin never get the chance to win her heart?

  1. Oh dear -bureaucracy strikes again! Still he got to talk to his mother which is good and at least it wasn’t the traumatic experience Hannah had when she ‘phoned home’!

  2. Hubby used to call when he was on deployment. All of them were bittersweet because I longed to hear from him and then I missed him so much when we hung up. (no face time back then). Now he’s got a new job and I can’t get him out of the house on his days off…. lol

  3. Well, that sucks. All those gifts he never received. Wasn’t there any conversation between them during those 5 years? Too bad. Still, a lot better conversation than the one Hannah had.

    1. Oh, someone would have made use of the gifts. And conversation was through email the Space Military Command decided to let through, so not like it would be if he remained on Earth.
